Get Your First Gemini API Key

New to Google AI Studio? Follow this beginner guide to get the key Google creates for your account and connect it to Addienator.

This Guide Is for Standard and Pro. Standard and Pro connect to Google Gemini using an API key from your own Google account. Enterprise users do not need a personal key because their organization provides the approved AI connection.

For a new personal Gmail account, Google normally creates the project and API key automatically.

Before You Begin

You need only three things:

  • A personal Google account, such as a new Gmail account.
  • An active Addienator Standard or Pro account.
  • A current web browser. You do not need to install anything.

Start with Non-Confidential Test Material. A new Google account begins on Google’s Free Tier. Before using confidential, regulated, or proprietary material, review the Free Tier data-use information later on this page and confirm that it is appropriate for your organization.

Get Your First Key

For a new Gmail account, Google normally creates a default project and API key after you sign in and accept its terms.

  1. Open Google AI Studio. Select Open Google AI Studio API Keys. Google AI Studio is Google’s website for accessing the Gemini API and managing your API key.
  2. Sign In with Your Gmail Account. Sign in with the personal Google account you want to use with Addienator. The Gemini API key belongs to the Google account and project you use here. Use an account that you are authorized to manage.
  3. Accept Google’s Terms. Because this is your first visit, Google may show terms or introductory screens. Review the information and follow Google’s prompts to continue. What happens next: after a new user accepts the terms, Google AI Studio normally creates a default Google Cloud project and API key automatically.
  4. Find the Key Google Created. The API Keys page should show a key associated with the new default project. You do not need to create another key if a key is already listed. A Google Cloud project is simply the Google container that holds the key, usage limits, and any future billing settings. Google creates it for you during this first-time setup.
  5. Copy the Key. Use the Copy control beside the listed key. The full key is copied to your clipboard, even if Google hides most of it on the screen. Do not paste the key into a note, email, chat message, screenshot, or shared document. Return directly to Addienator.
No Key Appeared?

Refresh the API Keys page once. If no key is listed, select Create API key and follow Google’s prompt. For a fresh personal account, choose the default project Google created.

Connect the Key to Addienator

  1. Return to Addienator. Return to the Addienator tab where the Gemini API key field is displayed.
  2. Paste the Key. Paste the key directly into the Gemini API key field. Do not add spaces or other characters before or after it.
  3. Select Free. For a fresh Google account, select Free in Addienator. New Google accounts begin on Google’s Free Tier unless you deliberately set up billing later. Addienator Pro and Google Paid Tier are different: Pro is your Addienator subscription, while Free or Paid describes the Google project connected to the API key.
  4. Check the Connection. Continue with Addienator’s connection check. A successful result means the key can connect to the Gemini API using the Free Tier selection.

You Are Connected. You can now begin your Addienator project. The key stays in your browser for the current session and is not saved in your Addienator project file.

A fresh Google account begins on the Free Tier. You can start there without adding a payment method.

This is the normal choice for a new account.

  • No Google billing setup is required.
  • Certain Gemini models are available within Google’s current Free Tier limits.
  • Choose Free in Addienator.
  • If you reach a usage limit, you may need to wait for the limit to reset or consider Paid Tier.

Move to Google Paid Tier Later

Paid Tier is optional. Set it up only when you intentionally want paid Google usage, additional model access, or higher limits.

  • Billing must be activated through Google AI Studio.
  • Google may request payment information or prepaid credits.
  • Google charges the connected Google billing account directly.
  • After Google confirms that the project is paid, change the tier selection in Addienator from Free to Paid.
  • Selecting Paid in Addienator does not activate Google billing.

Review Google’s Current Billing Instructions

Google controls its prices, models, limits, billing arrangements, and eligibility rules. The Addienator subscription does not include Google Gemini usage charges.

Review Google’s Data-Use Terms

Google’s current Gemini API pricing information distinguishes between Free Tier and Paid Tier data use.

Google currently states that Free Tier content may be used to improve Google products. Google currently states that Paid Tier prompts and responses are not used to improve Google products.

Before using confidential, proprietary, regulated, or personal information, review Google’s current terms and confirm that the selected tier is permitted by your organization.

Addienator does not change Google’s terms. Enterprise customers use the provider connection approved and controlled by their organization.

Keep Your Key Secure

Treat the API key like a password for Gemini API usage.

  • Do not email it.
  • Do not paste it into a support form.
  • Do not save it in a shared document.
  • Do not include it in a screenshot or video.
  • Do not post it in chat or source code.
  • Do not share it with a colleague.
  • Paste it only into the Gemini API key field in Addienator.

Someone who obtains your key may be able to use your Google project’s quota or create unexpected charges if billing is active.

Addienator holds the key in browser session storage while you work. It is not written into your saved Addienator project file and is not sent to Addienator servers.

If You Expose the Key

Create a replacement key in Google AI Studio. Paste and test the replacement in Addienator. After the new key works, disable or delete the exposed key and review your Google usage for activity you do not recognize.

Troubleshooting

Problems During First-Time Setup

Google keeps asking me to sign in.

Confirm that cookies and sign-in functions are allowed for Google AI Studio. Close duplicate Google sign-in tabs, return to the API Keys page, and sign in again with the Gmail account you want to use.

I accepted the terms, but I do not see a key.

Wait a moment and refresh the API Keys page once. If the list remains empty, select Create API key and choose the default project Google created for your account.

I see more than one button or introductory screen.

Google may change the wording or order of its first-time screens. Continue until you reach the API Keys page. Look for a listed key and a Copy control. Do not enter billing information unless you intentionally want Google Paid Tier.

Addienator says the key is not valid.

Return to Google AI Studio and copy the key again using the Copy control. Paste it directly into Addienator, confirm that Free is selected, and run the connection check again. Make sure no spaces were added before or after the key.

The key worked, but Addienator later reached a limit.

A Free Tier account has Google usage limits. Open the Google AI Studio Usage page to review the project’s current activity and limits. You may need to wait for the limit to reset or choose to set up Paid Tier.

I set up Google billing, but Addienator still shows Free.

Google billing and Addienator’s tier selector are separate. Confirm that Google shows the project as Paid, then change the tier selection in Addienator to Paid and run the connection check again.

Google AI Studio appears to be unavailable.

Check Google AI Studio’s official status page. If Google reports an incident, wait until the service recovers and try again.

I used a work or school Google account instead.

An organization may restrict Google AI Studio or API-key creation. Use a personal account only if your organization permits it, or contact the organization’s Google administrator. Addienator support cannot change Google account permissions.

Can Addienator support create or inspect my key?

No. The key belongs to your Google account. Addienator support will never ask you to send, reveal, or upload it.

Common Questions

Do I need to create a Google Cloud project?

Usually not. For a new Google AI Studio user, Google normally creates a default Google Cloud project and API key automatically after the terms are accepted.

Do I need to click Create API key?

Not if Google already created and listed a key. Use the existing key. Select Create API key only if no usable key appears or you later need a replacement.

Will I be charged when Google creates the key?

No. A fresh Google account begins on the Free Tier. Google billing begins only after you deliberately complete Paid Tier billing setup and use paid services.

Does Addienator Pro include Google Paid Tier?

No. Addienator Pro provides Addienator’s Pro features. Google Gemini billing is separate and is managed directly through Google AI Studio.

Can this key read my Gmail or Google Drive?

No. The key is used to authenticate Gemini API requests for its Google project. It does not give Addienator access to Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, or other Google account content.

Does Addienator save the key?

Addienator holds the key in your browser for the current session. It is not saved in your Addienator project file and is not sent to Addienator servers.

Can I share the key with someone else?

No. Keep personal API keys private. Each Standard or Pro user should use a key they are authorized to manage. Teams that need one organization-approved connection should consider Addienator Enterprise.

Do Enterprise users follow this guide?

No. Enterprise team members use the AI connection hosted and controlled by their organization and do not enter personal Gemini API keys.
